ABOUT THIS VEHICLE
This example has undergone a comprehensive, top-to-bottom restoration completed in 2024, resulting in a beautifully presented and mechanically refreshed vehicle that remains faithful to its original character. Since completion, only 281 kilometers have been added, reflecting the quality of the work and the care with which it has been maintained.
Finished in its correct Polaris Silver, the exterior showcases the unmistakable design elements that define the 2002 Turbo. These include the aggressive turbo-specific body kit, front air dam, rear spoiler, and iconic multi-color graphics. The car rides on period-correct 13-inch Alpina wheels, complemented by polished trim, dual side mirrors, black badging, and a single center-exit exhaust, all contributing to its purposeful and unmistakable stance.
Inside, the cabin is finished in black Skai vinyl with matching door panels, dashboard, and center console, offering a clean and period-authentic environment. Rentrop sport seats provide both comfort and support, while details such as salt-and-pepper carpeting and Coco floor mats enhance the vintage character. The driver is greeted by a classic three-spoke steering wheel and a full suite of VDO analog instrumentation, including a 240 kmh speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. A center-mounted boost gauge and clock further emphasize the cars performance focus, while features such as a manually operated sunroof, Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, and rear quarter vent windows add to the driving experience.
At the heart of the 2002 Turbo is its legendary 2.0-liter turbocharged M10 inline-four engine, equipped with a factory Kuhnle, Kopp & Kausch turbocharger and Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. Factory rated at 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, this powerplant delivers a raw and engaging driving experience that helped define the era. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential, providing excellent balance and driver involvement. Bilstein shocks further enhance handling and ride quality.
The 2024 restoration addressed every major mechanical and cosmetic system. The engine was refreshed with new pistons, while the fuel system was comprehensively serviced, including cleaning and resealing of the Kugelfischer injection pump and refinishing of the fuel tank. The cooling and lubrication systems were updated with new components, and the ignition system was upgraded with a 123ignition distributor. The transmission was serviced and fitted with a new clutch and supporting components, while the braking system was overhauled and the suspension fully renewed with new bushings, springs, and hardware. The underside was also refinished, underscoring the depth and quality of the restoration.
This example spent time in Germany before relocating to the Netherlands in 1998, where it remained until its restoration. It now stands as a carefully restored and highly collectible example that captures the essence of BMWs early turbocharged engineering.
The 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo remains a defining model of the 1970s performance era. With its limited production, distinctive styling, and groundbreaking turbocharged performance, it continues to be one of the most sought-after classic BMWs. This fully restored example offers an exceptional opportunity to own a piece of automotive history that is as engaging to drive as it is significant to collect.
