The “Type 356” was the first sports car to bear the Porsche name on it. Ferry Porsche designed and produced Project 356 to be a lightweight car with an engine that produced enough horsepower to be a fun car to drive. The 356A (c.1955) started existence with a 1.3-liter engine and 50 horsepower. Throughout its first decade of production until 1965, the 356 came with a variety of engines up to 2.0-liter and in race versions the coveted 4-cam engines which Porsche felt should not be sold to the public due to their complexity. The 356 for the most part had four distinct build variations the Pre-356A (1948-1955), 356A (1955-1959), 356B (1959-1963) and finally the 356C (1963-1965). The 356 build variants included a coupe, cabriolet, notchback and speedster, all of which had variants within each model from mild to wild.
Our 1960 Porsche 356 Roadster Chassis #88716 was built by long time Porsche enthusiast and racer Peter Callaghan. Callaghan had a long history of racing Porsche cars in the 1960’s and 70’s from 356 and 914 E-Production to 911 B-Production cars. According to the CoA the car was originally Ruby Red (6002) with light grey leatherette, but as with all of Callaghan’s Red Dog race cars it was quickly painted dark blue. Chassis #88716 was raced in the SCCA E Production class at great venues like Lime Rock Park, Bryar National, Pocono, Thompson, Bridge Hampton, Nelson Ledges, Summit Point and Road Atlanta. Callahan set this car up to be his after the race car to have around the race tracks. This car has a high performance flat 4 cylinder Porsche air cooled engine, a 4 speed manual gearbox, roll hoop and Penske Racing Shocks. Chassis #88716 also has a very unique transmission configuration of 1st 3.09:1, 2nd 1.93, 3rd 1.35, and 4th 1.04. This gearbox configuration was only in Porsche 356 GS/GT cars, an interesting choice by Callaghan. The Roadster lives up to its name providing a whole lot of open air fun, quick acceleration and extremely racecar like handling. The Chassis # states this car is a Roadster built in 1960. This 356 provides the visceral drive we all crave from grassroots motorsports based cars.
